直接读取大脑中的想法,将其转化为可播放的语音,这听起来似乎是一个非常“科幻”的概念。然而事实上,在尖端的医疗和工程领域,这项技术已经取得了相当程度的进展。试想一下,如果能够完全实现并顺利推广这项技术,将大脑中的神经活动直接表现为可被外界读取的信号,那么对于过去无法正常进行表达与交流的患者来说,例如长期受到失语症、沟通障碍等问题困扰的人群,无疑是一个能够重新获得语言能力的好消息。
最近,哥伦比亚大学的研究团队就有了一个关于这项技术的新发现。这项研究已经被发表在《科学报告》杂志上,研究人员认为,从人的大脑活动中提取内容,再借助外界手段重新构建出语音信息,这类技术是完全可行的。文章中研究人员描述了他们具体的实验过程,和对实际应用的看法。

哥伦比亚大学的研究团队对五名癫痫患者进行了有关的测试。研究人员借助患者大脑在正常的治疗过程中已经植入的电极,收集了此次研究所必要的数据。这些数据主要包括患者在听到具体的声音、信息或者一些故事时,大脑产生的反应与活动情况。研究团队利用深度学习与神经网络分析,匹配了各种声音与患者大脑活动之间的关系。在机器学习等新技术的帮助下,整个过程相对于传统实验方法来说更加智能、高效和准确,并且能够对模糊、难以辨别的情况做出模拟与判断。
文章中说明,在完成这套识别系统后,配合声码器,就能够将患者的大脑活动“翻译”成语言。就目前而言,系统会智能地分析患者大脑中的神经数据。当患者接收到外部声音后,反应所产生的神经信号会被系统读取,系统依照之前的机器学习判断出具体的声音,再由声码器合成人工语音,最终这个语音即反映出患者最初听到的声音。利用深度学习的优势,即使是系统从未见过的神经活动,它也能够迅速做出反应,匹配出尽可能接近的语音内容。
在过去类似的研究中,研究人员常常忽视这些合成语音被正确识别的可能性,经常会有形成声音但是没有具体含义的情况出现。因此,此次哥伦比亚大学的研究团队还进行了另一项实验进行验证。研究团队让另一组人员听取由声码器合成的人工语音,测试这些经过信号转化并通过智能学习生成的声音是否能够被理解。测试结果显示,大约75% 的单词都能够被正确辨认。研究人员表示,整个过程非常像和苹果Siri之类的人工智能进行语音交互,事实上两者也确实存在类似的技术。

不过需要说明的是,这项研究是通过大脑中感知声音的部分来读取大脑活动的,而非直接在生成语言的大脑区域里进行。简单来说,就是读取的过程本身也是一个间接的过程,不是直接的“所想即所得”。因此,这套系统和声码器尚未能够做到完全正确表达出患者所想这样的功能。但是,这种重现大脑所接收声音的技术,毫无疑问也是在这个领域里的一项重大突破。这也显示出未来它还有更大的提升空间与发展前景。
尽管目前这项技术还是仅仅能够合成非常简单的词组,但是研究人员已经着手进行改进,他们接下来的目标就是实现长句以及复杂句式的表达。研究团队最终的目的,正是实现让患者能够通过外界的协助,正确无误地表达出想说但无法说出的话。通过这项技术带来的力量,让失去声音和语言表达能力的患者不再感到恐惧与绝望。
