  尽管经历过一次又一次的失败,但最终人们还是在科学与技术的帮助下,实现了在天空中自由飞翔的梦想。近百年以来,飞机设计与制造的工业水平在不断提升,工程师们也一直致力于发展出更快、更轻盈的飞行器。

  过去,人们通过仿造鸟类的生理结构,制造出了各式各样的飞行器,包括发明了飞机。飞机拥有两侧机翼,是用来产生升力的主要结构。就像早期飞行器是对鸟类翅膀结构的简易模仿一样,对于飞行器的研制一直都离不开仿生学。如果仔细观察鸟类,我们就会发现它们在漫长的演化过程中,翅膀末端拥有了极度纤薄的羽毛。现在,研究者也试图模仿这些精致的羽毛结构,寻找出性能最佳的机翼设计。

  得益于技术的高速发展,今天的研究人员已经能够制造出和鸟类羽毛薄度近乎一致的机翼末端。根据流体力学的原理,如果机翼形态不合适,其前后翼产生的涡流必然会相互叠加,影响机翼性能。因此如果是在过去,进行这些工程测试可能会费时费力。但是现在,借助计算机模拟和电脑成像技术,研究人员很快就能够选定用于测试的理想机翼,避免不必要的浪费。

  在《皇家学会会刊A》的一篇研究中,来自纽约大学的研究团队设计出了一种性能突出的机翼。研究人员将这种机翼称之为“泪滴形”机翼。如果从侧面进行观察,我们就会发现,泪滴形机翼拥有一种非对称的前后比例。它的前端如同一个圆面,而后端则是细长的“尾巴”。正如鸟类的翅膀一样,泪滴形机翼在最末的部分也是一层“最薄的羽毛”。不过奇妙的是,这种机翼看起来就像是一个“泪滴”,或者说更像是“鱼鳍”。这种“鱼鳍”形态让泪滴形机翼无论是在向前推进或是在水面游动方面,都要比传统的机翼更加强大。

  最初,运用成熟的3D打印技术,研究团队先后制作了10种各不相同的机翼。紧接着在实验室,研究人员将各种机翼分组,分别进行扑翼测试和水中模拟测试。在整个过程中,测试数据全部都会传输到实验室的计算机内进行进一步的演算。经过事先设计的算法模拟,研究人员得到了8种计算机认为更加理想的机翼形态。于是,同样经过3D打印,这8种新型机翼也投入到与之前相同的测试之中。如此不断迭代,在第14轮测试后,研究人员发现,其中有一种机翼形态一直存在。而从第11轮测试开始,这个机翼形态就一直保持着极佳的性能。研究人员因此得到了这个泪滴形机翼。不过当研究人员继续进行迭代,最终就只是得出当前技术所无法实现的一些超薄型机翼。

  这项研究不仅给出了一种极致的机翼形态,它在研究方法上也给后来者诸多启示。研究运用了模拟成像、3D打印与算法学习技术,既节省了打造机翼的时间,又能高效率地进行实验测试。同时,实验过程中流体力学理论与实际测试的结果互为补充,形成一个不断迭代、生成最佳结果的流程。

  从仿生学的角度,实验结果完美地印证了鸟类双翼结构的精妙之处。今天人们依然可以从生物演化的规律上找到可以加以利用和模仿的形态特征。同时,这个结果似乎也在暗示,性能更高的机翼会更加接近于鱼类的某些特征。当然,这其中的关系与缘由还有待今后进一步的研究。
