  氢气是一种十分清洁的能源,燃烧后只产生水,没有污染。考虑到地球上丰富的海水资源,如果可以通过可再生能源(比如太阳能、风能等)产生的电能来电解水得到氢,那将颠覆目前化石燃料占主流的能源格局,帮助人类解决能源危机和环境问题。然而,目前全世界只有4%的氢是通过电解水产生的,这主要是因为当前技术条件下整个过程成本很高,难以推广。

  目前,市场上主要有两种电解水技术,一种基于碱性液体电解质,另一种是聚合物电解质膜。前者是一种比较成熟的技术,已经出现多年,使用地球含量丰富的金属为催化剂,更为经济,但效率较低。而后者电解效率高,有文献报道,通过将光伏电池与两个串联的电解槽相结合,可以实现30%的太阳能氢转换效率。然而,这个过程需要使用的贵金属催化剂价格昂贵且极为稀缺,前景并不明朗。

  近日,西班牙加泰罗尼亚化学研究所(ICIQ)的课题组研究发现,碱性水电解过程中利用强磁性的混合氧化物如NiZnFe4Ox做电催化剂,当向阳极上施加中等强度的磁场(≤450 mT)时,电流密度的增量能够超过一倍。他们还发现磁场的这种“加持”效果在修饰后的泡沫Ni电极上同样适用,磁场下其催化活性提高了约40%,可在低电位下达到很高的电流密度。相关论文发表于Nature Energy。

  之前已经有相关研究证实,自旋极化在析氧反应(OER)反应中起到的积极作用。而OER反应,一向被认为是水分解的瓶颈。理论上,磁性电极也可能带来类似的积极效果。此外还有研究发现,在磁场的作用下,由洛伦兹力引起的磁流体动力对流可以推动电解液的循环,加速气泡和电极分离。而且,利用磁性纳米粒子修饰的电极,施加高频交变磁场,可以使电极表面产生类似高温的状态,提升电解效率。不过,上面两个工作中磁场的这些效果都是以间接的方式起作用的,而且还需要特殊设计的电解器。

  研究人员测试了多种OER催化剂(a, IrO2; b, NiO; c, Raney Ni; d, Ni2Cr2FeOx; e, NiFe2Ox; f, FeNi4Ox; g, ZnFe2Ox; h, NiZnFe4Ox; i, NiZnFeOx)在有无磁场条件下的极化曲线,希望确定磁场能否直接影响水电解产氢的性能。除了非磁性催化剂IrO2的改变可以忽略不计以外,其他磁性催化剂的电流密度都有明显增强,研究者称之为磁电流。

  既然该现象与电极的磁性有关,于是研究者探讨了磁电流增量与电极的磁化强度之间的联系,发现二者呈线性关系。作为实验中磁化强度最大的NiZnFe4Ox电极,在1.65 V电压下,电流密度增加了近一倍。

  问题来了。如果根据之前的解释,磁场主要是促进电解液的循环,那么为何电流密度会与电极的磁化强度有如此密切的关系呢?这表明这种效应与催化剂结合的氧中间体的电子自旋状态有关。

  OER反应是电解水中的限速步骤,是一个缓慢且需要能量的四电子过程,O-O键的形成必须通过自旋守恒,来以此产生基态氧分子。研究者通过计算认为,磁场具有限制自旋的作用,有利于氧自由基在形成O-O键的过程中在磁性电极表面平行排列,因此对高磁性催化剂的影响最大。

  有科学家评论到,这是一项非常漂亮的工作,但是,自旋对催化剂表面反应的影响是非常复杂的,具体机机理还未被完全解释。不过,该研究为碱性电解槽技术的技术改进开拓了道路,如果这种方法可以规模化应用,很可能降低电解水产氢的成本,让我们距离这种清洁燃料更近一步。
