
在所有太阳系岩质行星中,人类对水星的探索次数是最少的(图片来源:pixabay)
相比太阳系里的其他行星,人们似乎对于水星的探索兴趣并不大。据统计,在所有太阳系岩质行星中,人类对水星的探索次数是最少的。之所以会形成这种局面,最主要的原因是因为水星的探索成本高昂。并且,探索水星的价值似乎不高,人们更愿意将资源投入到其它更具魅力、更加神秘的行星探索项目之中。在种种原因的导致下,水星就产生了长达数十年的探索空白期。
人们对水星缺乏兴趣的两个主要原因可能要追溯到五十年前。在上世纪七十年代中期,美国曾经发射“水手(Mariner)”十号探测器对水星进行第一次较为完整的探索任务。从“水手”十号探测器发回的照片上看,水星和月球的“长相”十分相似,星球上同样有大量各式各样的环形山。这使得人们大失所望,这种近乎“双胞胎”的类似让水星一直以来都缺乏足够的吸引力。当时的人们普遍认为水星和月球有着相似的特征和演变过程,没有必要进行重复的探索。
另一个原因是,由于水星是距离太阳最近的行星,要把探测器送到水星的运行轨道上并不容易,整个过程需要消耗大量的能量克服引力。探测器会在太阳的作用下不断加速,而要被水星捕获,就需要将速度控制在13km/s。如此一来,探测器就必须携带大量燃料,这就提高了探索成本,并且一定程度上降低了效率。

由于这些原因,人们对于水星的探索一度停滞。一直到前几年,科学家才又开展了“信使(Messenger)”号水星探索任务。令人惊喜的是,这一次“信使”号给过去的消极局面带来了转机。新的探测结果证明了水星仍然具有值得探索的地方。例如,水星和地球一样具有磁场,而在火星和金星上却没有,这其中的缘由还是一个未解之谜。并且,水星的磁场是活跃的,这对于一个比火星还小的行星来说是不可思议的。
再者,水星的密度很高,科学家对于水星内部结构的研究很有可能帮助人们更好地理解行星演化的规律。现阶段所有的行星形成假说都不能够完全适用于水星的情况,它有60%的质量来源于铁核,这个数字比火星或者地球都要高出一倍以上,令人匪夷所思。
还有一个方面,水星上有火山活动的痕迹,这些痕迹完全不同于月球或者其它行星,它的特征更加突出和显著。这也是一个有待探索的区域,它意味着水星可能曾经有相当长的火山活动期。通过研究今天水星上的地貌,可以帮助人们解开有关水星地质年代的种种谜团。

2018年,欧洲空间局(ESA)和日本宇航研发机构(JAXA)的“贝皮科伦布(BepiColombo)”探测器成功发射。这是自“信使”号以来的第三个水星探索计划,同时也是第一个由欧洲和日本主导研发的水星探测器项目。该计划的名字用以纪念意大利数学家、工程师朱塞佩·贝皮·科伦布(Giuseppe Bepi Colombo)教授。该项目主要由欧洲空间局研发的“水星行星轨道卫星”和日本宇航研发机构研发的“水星磁层轨道器”构成。
“贝皮科伦布”的主要任务就是获取更多有关证据证明科学家关于水星谜团的猜想。除此之外,水星上还有更加独特的极地和洼地等地貌需要更进一步的数据资料以供研究。甚至包括通过水星的进动现象验证广义相对论,也在“贝皮科伦布”的计划之内。“贝皮科伦布”的探索结果将会让我们重新认识水星,至少它绝不是如同人们过去所认为的那样,只是月球的“双胞胎”。
水星在太阳系中特殊的位置和奇特的内部结构使它具有极高的研究价值。无论是行星与太阳的关系、演变规律,还是由于水星的这种特殊性而变得更加明显和极端的气候、地貌、磁场等等,都是科学家们的研究目标。同时,随着科技的进步,新设备能够更加容易地克服恶劣的环境,以及对抗来自太阳的负面影响。这些都给了今天科学家探索水星最合适的时机和条件。
